Liberia

Liberia is Africa’s oldest republic founded by freed American and Caribbean slaves. Liberia is mostly inhabited by indigenous Africans, with the slaves’ descendants comprising 5% of the population. Liberia is located on the west coast of Africa. It is bordered by Sierra Leone to its northwest, Guinea to its north, Côte d’Ivoire to its east, and the Atlantic Ocean to its south-southwest. Once on the rise, Liberia is now in ruins due to several years of civil wars and poor management.

How it started...

Prior to traveling to the United States, she was unaware of nonprofits and how they can serve as a vehicle of change for the underprivileged.

In 2018, Edwina visited Liberia for the first time in over 30 years since leaving the country due to civil war. During her visit, she was devastated and sadden by conditions of various communities. Lack of clean drinking water, starving families, children were not in school instead, they were street vendors trying to make ends meet for they and their families. In preparation for going home she solicited clothes, shoes, notebooks and reading materials from her colleagues at work for children in Liberia. At the end of her visit, she promised to return to help improve conditions for the children and families she met.

The day before returning to the United States, her niece fell ill, and had to be taken to the hospital. The nearest hospital was a makeshift clinic, and it was in bad shape.

It is these events plus her own experiences growing up in Liberia, where young girls were sexually exploited for financial assistance, that generates the urge to do something to give this generation an opportunity to rise above their circumstances.
