Liberia is Africa’s oldest republic founded by freed American and Caribbean slaves. Liberia is mostly inhabited by indigenous Africans, with the slaves’ descendants comprising 5% of the population. Liberia is located on the west coast of Africa. It is bordered by Sierra Leone to its northwest, Guinea to its north, Côte d’Ivoire to its east, and the Atlantic Ocean to its south-southwest. Once on the rise, Liberia is now in ruins due to several years of civil wars and poor management.
